Simple Guide to Measuring Your Lawn for Lawn Care

Measuring your lawn is crucial for buying the right amount of products like fertilizer. Here's how to do it easily:

Why Measure Your Lawn

Save Money:

Knowing your lawn's size helps you buy the right amount of products, saving you money.

Product Application:

Many lawn care products are recommended per 1,000 square feet, so knowing your lawn's size is essential.

How to Measure Your Lawn

We need to find the area in your property that is grass.  In other words, where you will be maintaining and applying products such as fertilizer.

  1. Measure Total Property Area:

Measure the total area of your property, including non-grass areas like your house, driveway, and sidewalks.

  1. Calculate the Grassy Area:

Subtract the non-grass area from the total property area to get your lawn's size.

Method #1: Walk and Measure

This method is good for yards with four distinct sides, or for people who are old school and like to calculate manually.

  1. Find Total Area of Property:

Walk around your property and count your steps. Each step is roughly 1 yard (3 feet).

  1. Calculate Area:

Multiply the length and width of your lawn to get the area in square feet.

  1. Find Total Area of Non-Grassy Areas of Property:

Repeat steps #1 and #2, except for non-grassy areas of your property (i.e. driveways, house, patio, etc.)

  1. Calculate Area of Grassy Areas:

Subtract (Total Area - Area of Non-Grassy Areas) = Area of Grassy Areas

Method #2: Measure Online

This method is good for yards without four distinct sides, or for people who are looking for a quick and easy answer.

Use Online Tools:

Use online tools like Measure My Lawn to measure your lawn's area based highlighting grassy/maintained areas in your property.

Record Measurements:

Keep a record of your lawn's measurements for future reference. With the amount of times you’ll reference this, I highly recommend recording your measurements on the diagram of your property in which you recorded your collections for your soil sample.

Pro Tip:

Break your property up into 1,000 sq. ft. sections.  Most products such as fertilizer will recommend application rates in “X lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.”

If these sections are pre-determined (and soon memorized), it makes product applications that much easier moving forward.

By measuring your lawn, you'll know exactly how much product to buy and apply for a healthy, vibrant lawn.
